Start as a State-Owned Company.

CSN was founded on April 9, 1941, by the Brazilian government as a state-owned steel company. In 1946, the first blast furnace commenced operations.

In parallel, CSN acquired various mines to ensure the supply of ore, lime, and dolomite.

Privatization, broader positioning, also for self-sufficiency.

After privatization in 1993, CSN expanded its activities from 1996 onwards. These now include energy generation, due to its own hydroelectric power plants, as well as logistics, with its own port facilities and railways.

By 2000, CSN acquired additional thermal and hydroelectric power plants. CSN’s goal is for the group to be able to supply itself with raw materials and energy in most business areas.
